Every October 26, Americans observe National Day of the Deployed, a day dedicated to honoring the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who serve far from home. The observance also recognizes the families whose sacrifices, strength, and support make that service possible.
Whether stationed overseas, serving aboard ships, or carrying out missions around the world, deployed service members answer the call to defend our nation and protect its interests, often at great personal sacrifice.
The History of National Day of the Deployed
National Day of the Deployed began in North Dakota in 2006, when Shelle Michaels Aberle approached Governor John Hoeven with the idea of establishing a day to recognize deployed military personnel.
October 26 was chosen in honor of the birthday of Aberle’s cousin, U.S. Army officer David Hosna, who was deployed to Iraq at the time.
Governor Hoeven issued the first proclamation recognizing the observance. As support spread across the country, the United States Senate passed a resolution in 2011 formally recognizing October 26 as the Day of the Deployed.
The Senate has continued recognizing the observance in subsequent years, encouraging Americans to honor deployed service members and their families.
The Sacrifices of Military Deployment
Deployment is an essential part of military service, but it often comes with significant personal challenges.
Service members may spend months away from their families, missing birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, graduations, and other important milestones. They face unfamiliar environments, demanding assignments, and sometimes dangerous conditions while fulfilling their duties.
The Families Who Serve at Home
Behind every deployed service member is a network of loved ones who also make sacrifices.
Military spouses often manage households and raise children while their partners are away. Parents, children, and extended family members endure long separations, limited communication, and uncertainty about their loved one’s safety.
Their resilience and dedication deserve recognition alongside the service of those wearing the uniform.
Honoring Those Who Answer the Call
National Day of the Deployed recognizes service members from every branch of the United States Armed Forces, including active-duty personnel, National Guard members, and reservists.
It honors those currently deployed, those who have returned home, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.
Americans can observe the day by reaching out to military families, sending messages of encouragement to deployed personnel, supporting military service organizations, or simply taking a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made in defense of our nation.
A Grateful Nation Remembers
On National Day of the Deployed, the Orange County Republican Party extends its deepest gratitude to the men and women serving our country far from home.
We also recognize the spouses, children, parents, and loved ones who carry on with courage and determination during their absence.
To every service member who has answered the call to deploy, and to every family waiting for a safe return: thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to our nation.
May we never take for granted the freedoms you help protect.
