On October 13, 2026, the United States Navy celebrated its 251st birthday, marking more than two and a half centuries of service, sacrifice, and dedication to defending our nation.
From its beginnings during the American Revolution to its role as one of the world’s most powerful naval forces, the U.S. Navy has played a vital role in protecting American independence, securing our seas, and defending freedom around the world.
From the Continental Navy to a Global Force
The United States Navy traces its origins to October 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the purchase and outfitting of two armed vessels to intercept British supply ships during the Revolutionary War.
This decision established the Continental Navy, giving the American colonies a naval force to challenge British control of the seas and support the fight for independence.
Although the Continental Navy was disbanded following the Revolutionary War, the growing nation soon recognized the need for a permanent naval force to protect American commerce and national security.
In 1794, Congress authorized the construction of six frigates, laying the foundation for the modern United States Navy. Four years later, the Department of the Navy was formally established.
Over the following centuries, the Navy would grow from a small fleet of sailing vessels into a modern force operating aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers, and advanced naval aircraft around the world.

Honoring America’s Sailors
For 251 years, generations of American sailors have answered the call to serve, often spending months at sea and far from their families to protect our nation.
From the sailors who fought for American independence to those serving aboard today’s ships, submarines, and aircraft, their courage and commitment have helped preserve the freedoms we enjoy.
We also recognize the families who support our sailors through deployments, separations, and the challenges of military life.
On this anniversary, we honor all who have served in the United States Navy, remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and thank those who continue to stand watch around the world.
Happy 251st Birthday to the United States Navy!
