Every September 18, Americans recognize the birthday of the United States Air Force and the Airmen who have served our nation at home and around the world.
The Air Force officially became an independent branch of the U.S. Armed Forces on September 18, 1947, but the history of American military aviation began decades earlier.
From the Army to an Independent Air Force
The roots of the Air Force date to 1907, when the U.S. Army established an Aeronautical Division within the Signal Corps. Military aviation continued to evolve through World War I and eventually became the Army Air Corps in 1926 and the Army Air Forces in 1941.
World War II demonstrated the growing importance of airpower and helped build support for establishing an independent military service dedicated to it.
On July 26, 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947, creating the Department of the Air Force and establishing the United States Air Force. The new service officially began operating independently on September 18, when W. Stuart Symington was sworn in as the first Secretary of the Air Force. Eight days later, Gen. Carl A. Spaatz became its first Chief of Staff.

August 1, 1907 — The Army established the Aeronautical Division of the Signal Corps, an early predecessor of today’s Air Force.
June 20, 1941 — The Army Air Forces was established during the buildup to America’s entry into World War II.
July 26, 1947 — President Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947.
